Through Pennsylvania’s Education Improvement Tax Credit Program (EITC), Merchants Bank recently donated $2,000 to The Northampton County Historical and Genealogical Society (NCHGS). This is the fourth year the Bank has donated $2,000 to NCHGS under the EITC Program.

Donations like those given by Merchants Bank are used to help bring history to life for school children. Barbara Kowitz, Executive Director of NCGHS explains the impact of these programs, “Thanks to the generous support of Merchants Bank, the doors are wide open for the school children of the Lehigh Valley! There is NOTHING more fulfilling than seeing the smiles on children’s faces as they ENJOY learning history, except perhaps when they return with their families and proudly service as their docents (museum tour guides).” NCHGS offers learning opportunities like field trips, traveling trunk shows and Fraktur art workshops, which local students may otherwise not be offered. Sandee Kennedy, Vice President and Market Manager of Merchants Bank, understands the importance of these programs, “Through NCHGS we learned that today’s children are alarmingly deficient when it comes to their knowledge of history. The staff and volunteers are able to provide the foundation for a broader knowledge base and do it in a fun and even hands-on way.”

Northampton County Historical and Genealogical Society operates the Sigal Museum, 1753 Bachmann Publick House, Mixsell House Museum and the Jacob Nicholas House Museum. In addition to the EITC Program, the Bank is also supporting one of Sigal Museum’s current exhibits, Heart and Soil: Our Farms, Our Legacy and their annual fundraiser, the Wine Gala and Auction. The Bank recently reprinted several original photographs from the NCHGS archive to display at their new 46 Centre Square location.
